The following is our basic literacy
curriculum content for Preschool through 8th Grade.
Topics are
explored
in a variety of ways using tribes centered models of
instruction. If an individual student or group of students
have mastered these specific content areas, then new
content is introduced. This ensures that all students
have equal opportunity to learn and develop their unique
gifts and talents.

2nd Grade Literacy
Review upper case/lowercase letters,
vowels and consonants, segmenting words into sounds.
Word wall words, rhyming words, weekly spelling practice,
spelling strategies, syllables, parts of speech,
nouns, adjectives etc…beginning and ending
sounds (chunks), blends (ch, ph etc), homonyms, antonyms,
synonyms, contractions, ending (er, ing, est, ed
es), finding similar/different spelling patterns,
common spelling patterns, and penmanship.
Strategies to decode words, parts
of a book, previewing and predicting strategies,
reading for a variety of purposes, finding and
selecting facts, retelling a story, beginning,
middle end of story, alphabetical order, building
fluency, intonation, story mapping, and pre-reading
and post reading.
Pre-writing strategies (think
aloud), correct sentence structure, uppercase,
lower case letters, ending punctuation, parts
of speech, editors checklist, reviewing writing,
typing skills, and research reports (using internet).
3rd Grade Literacy
Choosing just right books,
developing sustained reading times, finding
characters, setting, plot, developing a variety
of genres-folktales, poetry, biography, fiction,
journals, readers, experiencing theater, book
talks, summarize and re-tell, sequencing events,
predicting, and reading novels.
Word study: vowels, digraphs,
prefixes, suffixes, contractions, homophones,
synonyms, antonyms, pronouns, possessives,
compound words, 500 most frequently misspelled
words, dictionary skills, parts of speech,and
cursive.
Writing: prewriting, editing,
graphic organizers, writing journals, different
purposes; note taking, organizing sequence,
story words, word choice, voice, research
skills, dictation skills, and transcribing.
4th Grade Literacy
Choosing just right books,
